Consignor

What is a consignor?

A consignor is a person who brings items to a consignment store to be sold on their behalf. The store accepts the items, prices and displays them, and pays the consignor a percentage of the sale price — called the consignor split — after an item sells.

Unlike a customer, who buys from the store, or a vendor in a vendor mall, who rents space to sell their own goods, a consignor transfers temporary custody of their items to the store and retains ownership until the item sells or the consignment period ends.

The terms of the relationship — including the split, the consignment period, what happens to unsold items, and any fees — are outlined in a consignor agreement.
