What are item labels in resale?

Labels (also called price tags) are the physical or printed tags attached to inventory items.

What a typically includes

Labels in a consignment or resale store carry more information than a standard retail price tag. Common fields include:

  • Price — the current asking price for the item

  • Barcode — a scannable code that ties the item to its record in the store’s inventory or POS system

  • Item specifications — brand, category, size, color, or condition notes

  • Intake date — when the item entered the store, used to calculate discount eligibility

  • Discount schedule — some stores print upcoming markdown dates directly on the tag (e.g., “30% off after 11/1”)

Label formats

Resale stores most commonly use thermal-printed labels, which do not require ink and hold up well on the sales floor. Labels come in a range of sizes and styles — hang labels for clothing, adhesive labels for hard goods, or barbell labels for jewelry and small items. Many stores print labels directly from their consignment software using a thermal printer.
