What are fees in resale?

In resale and independent retail, fees are charges that a store may assess to consignors or vendors beyond the standard split. They typically cover specific services, costs, or administrative functions that the store incurs on the consignor’s or vendor’s behalf.

Common types of fees in resale

Payout fee. A charge deducted at the time of payout to cover the cost of issuing payment — mailing a check, processing an ACH transfer, or using a digital payment platform. See Payout Fee.

Listing or intake fee. Some stores charge a per-item fee at intake to cover the cost of processing, tagging, and displaying an item regardless of whether it sells.

Pickup fee. If a consignor fails to retrieve unsold items within the pickup window, some stores charge a storage or disposal fee.

Account or membership fee. Some stores charge a recurring fee to maintain an active consignor or vendor account.

Online listing fee. Some stores charge a fee when an item sells online to cover the cost of shipping or listing an item.

Vendor fees. In a vendor mall, the most common fee is booth rent, but there may also be fees for utilities, shared services, or common area maintenance.

Disclosing fees

Any fee a store charges should be clearly stated in the consignor agreement or vendor agreement before the consignor or vendor commits. Fees that appear as surprises — especially at payout — are one of the most common sources of consignor complaints and disputes.
